Cenere
Cenere (Ash), a seminal work from the One Color Collection, is an ode to essentiality and profound texture. The canvas is dominated by a palette of dull, matte, and chalky grays, applied with a dense and layered texture evoking volcanic ash or the dust of time settled on surfaces. The color is not evenly applied but features subtle vibrations and micro-reliefs that catch the light and create subtle shadows, transforming the pictorial surface into a topographical map of residual traces.
The element of visual disruption is entrusted to textural inserts and found objects, embedded in the paint like archaeological finds emerged from the past: a stylized figure, perhaps a mannequin or a toy, a small clock, and plastic or paper fragments punctuate the composition, challenging the viewer to decode their silent story. The powerful and brutal frame of oxidized and rusted iron acts as a textural perimeter amplifying the resonance of the gray and highlighting the concepts of time, wear, and residue. Cenere is a work of profound contemplation: it invites one to look beyond the surface and reflect on the silent permanence of the traces of human existence.
